Flies

Flies Why Are They a Problem?

Houseflies can spread germs by flying from feces to food. Although flies occasionally enter homes, most flies do not like to be indoors. More often, they’re found outdoors, around warm-blooded animals such as people, pets and livestock.

Fly Biology

Adult houseflies are 6 - 8 mm in length and grayish in colour. The eggs can be laid in any moist material, including animal feces, garbage, decaying fruits or vegetables, or piles of lawn clippings. Fly larvae are called maggots and appear worm like. The adult eats liquids using a sponge like tube called a proboscis. Houseflies have taste buds on their feet.

How to Prevent Invasions & Infestations

  • When cooking or barbequing, meat and other food, ensure that it is covered at all times.
  • Don’t leave canned cat or dog food sitting out all day — give pets only what they can eat immediately.
  • Fecal matter in the garden from the family dog or cat should be disposed of quickly, before flies have time to lay their eggs.
  • To prevent flies from entering the home, ensure that all window screens fit properly and that there are no cracks or holes that would allow them to enter the house.

Recommended Treatment

If the fly problem is not serious, you can control flies simply by using a fly swatter or vacuuming them up and disposing of the bag outside the house. If the fly infestation indoors is severe, see our recommended solutions below.
